Becoming a Foster Parent

I have a dear friend who decided to move to California after we graduated from college. She is so super fun and I always have such a fantastic time when I am with her. Now keep in mind she is 24 and single and living life to the fullest. So I was full of shock when she told me she became a foster parent in the state of California. There was a reason for this decision.

You see, her neighbors are not exactly “legitimate” residents of the United States. When the 17 year old neighbor girl gave birth to her 22 year old boyfriend’s child, her boyfriend was deported to Mexico. Because the baby was a resident of the US and the Mom was under 18, the US government would not allow her to leave the country with the baby until the Mom is 18 and a legal adult.

So instead of letting the 17 year old and her baby live in a shelter, she decided to go through the proper steps, and become a foster parent. She filled out some paperwork, got fingerprinted and has a social worker come check out her house every so often to make sure it’s “safe” for kids. She now comes home after a long day of work to her 2 kids. She should be nominated for Mom of the Year!
